February 27, 2004 -- 'Olelo The Corporation for Community Television has partnered with the Digital Independent Film Festival (DIFF) this year for it's annual event on May 1st, 2004. The screening room at the Mapunapuna location has been chosen as the location to screen the movies selected for the festival. "Unless we need bigger facilities, we think that the screening room at 'Olelo will be fine." Bill Corless the Executive Director of the Festival Said. "We also will be planning to have an awards banquet on Sunday the 2nd of May, the location to be announced."
The DIFF as it is called was originally planned to run concurrent with the HIFF, the Hawaii International Film Festival, Hawaii's Premier Festival. "We wanted to run a Festival that would be this kind of Anarchy Film Festival like Slamdance is to Sundance. Since many films submitted to the HIFF are never screened we thought this would give local filmmakers a better chance to have their films seen." Corless Said. "We felt the HIFF had its focus more on International Films."
But after thinking about it, Corless decided the festival could be different and focus on emerging digital technologies as the theme instead. Hence the name DIFF. This year in addition to having the films screen online they will be broadcast on 'Olelo as well. Movies submitted to the DIFF may be available on the Internet at their sister website at InstaMovie.com.
The purpose for InstaMovie.com is to give filmmakers a place to be seen and heard on the internet. The website is being marketed to distributors so they can view the independent films online. "Eventually we hope to have a movie on demand system set up where individuals can watch any movie anytime on the internet." Corless also said.
